What is an Ultrasound?

At Plantation Pet Health Center, we offer a very specialized diagnostic tool in ultrasound. Ultrasound technology allows us to examine several organs and systems deep inside the body without actually entering the body. Also, unlike radiology (x-ray), we are able to examine these organs in action and in motion! Ultrasound uses sound waves that are transmitted through the skin. These sound waves bounce off the tissues in the body and the echoes are received by the machine and translated into moving pictures. This is very helpful in diagnosing many problems, especially those related to the heart. The liver, kidneys, and spleen can also be examined for changes that might indicate cancer or other conditions.

We work with a company that uses a mobile ultrasound unit. This allows us to use their services and provide you a very valuable added service without having to store the equipment ourselves. When the appointment is scheduled, the technician brings the machine, takes all the pictures and videos needed of the organs affected, and then transmits them digitally over the phones (much like the Internet) to specialists who interpret the pictures and send us a written report.

The entire procedure is painless, relatively stress-free for your pet, non-invasive, and rarely requires anesthesia or sedation (unless your pet is just too active or stressed to lay still for the procedure).

Your pet may never need this service, but it is available here without having to travel to another facility.
